The Carroll Depot was constructed in 1897 at a cost of $40,000.  The Chicago and Northwestern railroad depot and luggage building recently went through a major restoration and will soon become the home of Carroll’s Chamber of Commerce.

This old courthouse was built in 1887. It housed Carroll County (Iowa) government offices, courts and the sheriff's office. It was replaced in 1965.

Andrew Carnegie made a fortune in the steel industry and provided funds to build libraries throughout the world.  Built in 1905, in Carroll, Iowa, this Carnegie Library was funded through a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie and is currently the home of the Carroll County Historical Society.

Built in 1879 in Carroll, Iowa, Burke's Hotel is remembered as being palatial, elegant and first-class. It was a popular stop with travelers and became a landmark of the Lincoln Highway. Ella Burke was known for sitting at the turret window along the highway, watching the traffic, the trains, and the people passing by. The hotel was torn down in September, 1972.

Built in Carroll, Iowa, in 1905 on land donated by Fr. Joseph Kuemper, who joined in house-to-house campaign and helped organize a hospital fair to raise $12,000 for construction. It was staffed and administered by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. The holy order, which is based in LaCrosse, Wis., continues to retain ownership today. The building was replaced in 1971.

Built in 1924 in Carroll, Iowa, the original school was established in 1905 and was staffed and administered by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. It was the only nursing school for sixty miles. To be eligible, students had to have been in the top 1/3 of their graduating classes and were required to board at the school. The building was torn down in 1992.

Fr. Joseph Kuemper founded St. Angela Domestic Science Institute in 1908, an all-girls boarding high school in Carroll to educate young women in the art of Christian homemaking.  The school was later renamed the St. Angela Academy.

The groundbreaking for this stone church, located in Carroll, Iowa, was on March 19, 1892, on the Feast of St Joseph.  The alter was purchased for $1,250 at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and was made from bird's eye maple and carved in Italy.  On June 17, 1963, it was announced that St Joseph's would be consolidated with Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church to form Holy Spirit and the building was torn down.

Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, in Carroll, Iowa, was dedicated debt-free in 1887, with the cost of the land and construction totaling $18,000.  The church was built from approximately 600,000 bricks.  The spire rose 120 feet, and the gilded cross at the pinnacle could be seen for miles.  On June 17, 1963, it was announced that Sts. Peter and Paul would be consolidated with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church to form Holy Spirit and the building was torn down.

The groundbreaking for Kuemper Catholic High School took place, in Carroll, Iowa, on March 19, 1954.  On the 50th anniversary, a time capsule was exhumed from the school's cornerstone and a new one put in its place.  The glass windows have been replaced and the front entrance has been enlarged, but the school continues to maintain its high standards and currently accommodates over 400 students.

The town of Templeton, Iowa, was founded in 1882 and was widely known for its bootlegged "Templeton Rye," which was popular during the Great Depression. (An entertaining history can be found at www.templetonrye.com) This drawing is of Main Street from a 1910 postcard. (Can you find the 12 people in the drawing?)

Benjamin Franklin Allen, Iowa's first millionaire, built Terrace Hill as his family home.  Construction of this 18,000-square-foot home began in 1866 and was completed in 1869.  The original cost of $250,000 included the Mansion, Carriage House, all of the furnishings, and approximately 30 acres of land.  In 1884, Frederick Marion Hubbell purchased Terrace Hill, and in 1971, the Hubbell family donated the Mansion and its eight acres of grounds to the state of Iowa to serve as the official residence of Iowa’s governors.
